Southbound Yacht Travel Scheme makes debut with first five Guangdong yachts
Cross-boundary leisure boating took a tangible step forward on October 16 when five Guangdong-registered yachts sailed into Hong Kong waters under the newly launched Southbound Yacht Travel Scheme. The arrival marks the first operational use of a policy designed to create a “one-hour living circle” for maritime tourism across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Announced jointly by Mainland and Hong Kong authorities earlier this year, the scheme allows eligible private yachts to move more freely between approved marinas in Guangdong and Hong Kong once operators have completed a simplified online filing, crew-list submission and customs declaration. Previously, formalities could take days; officials say clearances can now be processed in as little as 30 minutes. Tourism stakeholders believe easier yacht mobility will unlock new high-end visitor segments and stimulate demand for berths, repairs and provisioning services on both sides of the boundary. Hong Kong marinas have reported a spike in inquiries from GBA boat owners looking to secure weekend moorings and access the city’s restaurants and shopping. For Hong Kong businesses—from luxury retailers in Central to seafood restaurants in Sai Kung—the influx of yacht tourists could translate into significant spending, particularly during major events such as the Hong Kong International Boat Show. Yacht-charter and maintenance companies are likewise gearing up for more cross-border clientele. Regulators note that vessel operators must still comply with safety, insurance and environmental rules in both jurisdictions, and that Mainland-registered crew will undergo standard immigration checks upon arrival. Nonetheless, the pilot voyage is widely viewed as a milestone in deepening GBA connectivity beyond land and air links.
