UAE widens Golden Visa to nurses and teachers in latest talent-retention push
The UAE has once again broadened its flagship 10-year Golden Visa, this time opening the door to thousands of nurses, teachers and other front-line professionals who were previously restricted to shorter, employer-sponsored permits. According to Khaleej Arabia, the expansion was announced on 19 October and is framed as part of a wider effort to reassure expatriates after the spring missile and drone strikes linked to the Iran conflict briefly dented confidence and triggered a net outflow of about 61,000 residents from Dubai in March. Since its launch in 2019 as an investor-only route, the Golden Visa has morphed into what one London School of Economics academic describes as “an umbrella programme for both capital and talent, blending labour and industrial policy.” Doctors, engineers, researchers, creatives and e-sports players were added in earlier rounds; the latest tranche formally recognises the contribution of nurses and educators who kept hospitals, schools and universities running during the pandemic and the recent security crisis. For employers, the change removes a significant administrative burden. Hospitals can now recruit senior nurses overseas without shouldering renewal costs every two years, while private-school operators say the 10-year security of tenure will help them attract experienced teachers from the UK, India and the Philippines at a time of global shortages. Individuals gain the freedom to sponsor family members, own 100 per cent of a mainland business and spend unlimited time outside the Emirates without risking cancellation. Immigration advisers expect a surge in applications once the Integrated Customer Protection (ICP) and Dubai’s GDRFA update their portals. The cost of the Golden Visa—about AED 2,790 in federal fees plus insurance—remains unchanged, but applicants must show proof of employment and a valid professional licence. Healthcare facilities are already compiling nomination lists for critical-care and oncology nurses, while school groups say they will ring-fence packages to cover the one-off fee for top-performing teachers. The policy also dovetails with Abu Dhabi’s plan to create 30,000 jobs in the emerging gaming sector and Dubai’s target of 5.8 million residents by 2040. By extending long-term security to mid-income professionals, the Emirates hopes to deepen roots in its expat community and reduce churn, ultimately supporting consumer spending and housing demand.
