Air-raid alerts snarl Ukraine–Poland freight corridors, pushing waits at Dorohusk to 40 hours
A fresh wave of Russian drone and missile strikes in western Ukraine triggered a series of air-raid alerts early on 21 October that repeatedly shut down traffic processing at key Ukraine–Poland border posts. According to Poland’s official border-information portal and Ukrainian customs updates, the Dorohusk–Yahodyn freight corridor was hardest hit, with estimated outbound waits from Poland peaking at 40 hours for heavy trucks. Passenger-vehicle queues at the normally busy Krakivets and Shehyni crossings eased slightly by mid-morning as security warnings were lifted, but officials cautioned that any new alert automatically pauses clearance procedures. Volyn Customs reported 61 security stoppages between 10 and 19 October, totalling almost 53 hours of downtime. Shelters installed on the Ukrainian side in 2022 are now being used several times a day, forcing drivers and bus passengers to abandon vehicles and seek cover with little notice. The interruptions are slowing Ukraine’s e-Queue exit-booking system, creating knock-on congestion for exporters relying on just-in-time deliveries to EU clients. The disruptions come as Poland, Germany and Lithuania maintain temporary border controls inside Schengen until at least March 2027 in response to migration and security pressures. While passenger traffic still clears in one to two hours at most crossings, logistics companies say the unpredictable shutdowns are eroding the reliability of the trade lifeline that has replaced Black Sea shipping lanes blocked since Russia’s full-scale invasion. For businesses, the practical advice is to build extra buffer time into supply-chain schedules, monitor live queue trackers and subscribe to Polish and Ukrainian border-guard alerts on Telegram and X. Transport insurers are already demanding contingency routing plans, and freight forwarders report rising interest in rail alternatives via the Medyka and Mostyska terminals, even though capacity remains limited. In the longer term, both governments are fast-tracking hardened inspection shelters and redundant power supplies at road terminals, but those upgrades will not be fully operational before winter. Until then, exporters, aid agencies and shuttle operators face a volatile operating environment where a single siren can turn a routine crossing into an overnight wait.
