Paris-Brussels Eurostar Services Face Morning-Long Delays on Christmas Eve
Early-morning commuters hoping to dash from Paris to Brussels on 24 December found themselves stuck at Gare du Nord as Eurostar posted a series of ‘retards’ (delays) of up to three hours. The company’s live service-alert page cites ‘technical problems between Paris Gare du Nord and Bruxelles-Midi’ and ‘unexpected crowding’ at both termini.

With Eurostar running near-sold-out holiday timetables, even a one-hour hold ripples across north-European rail networks, forcing business travellers to rebook onward Thalys or ICE connections. British and U.S. executives, still required to undergo French exit checks and Belgian entry formalities, reported queue-times in excess of 90 minutes.

For mobility managers the episode is a reminder that rail, while greener than short-haul flights, remains vulnerable to last-minute disruption—especially since the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) adds biometric scans for non-EU nationals at Paris and Brussels terminals. Companies with same-day meetings should build a minimum three-hour buffer or arrange virtual options.

Eurostar says tickets dated 24 December can be exchanged free of charge within 60 days. Travellers holding Business Premier fares may use SNCF lounges but capacity is limited. Upgrades are reportedly selling out.

Looking forward, Paris transport officials insist that a €100 million security rebuild at Gare du Nord, due to start in January, will double border-control booths before next summer. Until then, both Eurostar and border police urge passengers to arrive “at least 90 minutes ahead of departure” during peak days.
