Employers holding a UK sponsor licence now face tougher day-to-day compliance after the Home Office quietly rewrote its approval letters this week. According to advisory firm Birketts, sponsors are now expected to log in to the online Sponsorship Management System (SMS) at least once every month to review allocations and submit any outstanding reports. Failure to do so could trigger an unannounced compliance visit or even licence suspension. The guidance ends the long-standing practice of designating a senior executive as Authorising Officer and assuming that quarterly checks were adequate. Birketts warns that HR teams must put diary reminders and delegation plans in place so holidays or staff changes do not cause a missed log-in. The April bulletin also clarifies that roles appearing on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) continue to attract a discounted visa fee of £628 for applications up to three years—saving £315 per applicant compared with the standard rate. Confusion between the ISL and the Temporary Shortage List has led to costly top-up payments when applicants select the wrong option online. In a further development, the recent NHS pay deal means Band 3 healthcare support workers in England now earn £25,760, nudging them over the £25,000 Skilled Worker threshold and opening a limited sponsorship window until the ISL closes on 31 December 2026. Employers needing ancillary clinical staff are being urged to accelerate recruitment while the discount still applies. Why it matters: licence revocation stops all sponsored employees from working, instantly exposing firms to civil-penalty fines and business-continuity risks. Global-mobility managers should audit internal SMS processes, brief executives named on licences, and budget for higher right-to-work compliance costs as checks are extended to contractors and freelancers.
