The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) quietly published its latest processing calendar on 17 July, confirming that Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications lodged on 1 July 2026 are only now being examined. General Employment Permit (GEP) filings are even further behind, with officers still working on cases submitted 10 June. Renewal applications for most permit types sit at 8 April, while reviews and appeals have slipped to late 2025. The update underlines the pressure on Ireland’s employment-permit regime as labour-market demand spikes in construction, healthcare, and ICT ahead of the country’s EU Council Presidency. Official statistics show a 17 % year-on-year rise in new applications in the first half of 2026. According to industry group Tech Ireland, at least 2,700 software-engineer vacancies remain unfilled because permit decisions have not yet issued. Processing delays have knock-on effects for mobility and project timelines. Many applicants must postpone flights until their permits are approved; others arrive on business-visitor status and risk running out of allowable days. HR teams are therefore building extra lead time—typically 12 weeks—for CSEP hires and advising staff to avoid travel until the electronic pre-clearance letter is in hand. DETE says it has redeployed ten case-workers from the Workplace Relations Commission and plans to outsource file-scanning to reduce manual data entry. A public consultation on quota changes closes on 18 August, after which ministers may lift limits for bricklayers, bus drivers and certain nursing grades. For now, employers should: (1) submit complete applications with medical-insurance evidence and skills-shortage justifications to dodge ‘request for information’ pauses; (2) use DETE’s Trusted Partner route, which is averaging three weeks faster; and (3) schedule assignment start-dates no earlier than October for roles that still require new permits.
