China Railway launches 60-day advance ticket ‘reservation’ pilot on Beijing–Shanghai corridors

From 20 July, passengers on both the Beijing–Shanghai High-Speed Railway and the parallel conventional Beijing–Shanghai line can place ‘reservation orders’ for tickets up to 60 days before departure—double the current 30-day sales window. The pilot, announced by China State Railway Group and accessed via the 12306 mobile app, allows travellers to queue digitally for high-demand seats; reservations are automatically converted into real tickets 16–20 days before travel, with payment required the same day. Users may submit up to three pending orders covering multiple dates and train numbers and can choose between an “exact train” or a “flexible window” mode that matches seat class, departure time and journey length preferences. Face-recognition and SMS verification guard against ticket scalping, while repeat non-payment will lock the function for 90 days. Although the scheme is domestic, it matters to global-mobility teams because the Beijing–Shanghai axis is the most heavily used route for intra-China assignments, client visits and consular travel. Early reservation helps secure business-class (“商务座”) inventory during the 62-day summer peak when seats can sell out within minutes of release. It also offers a hedge against flight delays on the same city-pair, where airlines still cancel services during summer thunderstorms. Railway officials said data from the trial will shape a nationwide roll-out later this year and hinted that real-name foreign-passport reservations—currently limited—will be integrated once biometric e-ID capture is fully deployed at major stations. Corporate travel policies may therefore need updating to reflect new rail-advance-purchase deadlines and cancellation penalties (5 percent fees apply to refunds made 8–20 days before departure under the pilot’s rules). Analysts add that shifting high-yield travellers to rail alleviates slot pressure at Beijing Daxing and Shanghai Hongqiao airports, freeing capacity for more international flights—an indirect but welcome boost for China’s broader global-mobility ecosystem.
