Spain’s flagship Madrid-Barcelona AVE corridor—Europe’s busiest high-speed rail route for business travel—was paralysed for just over an hour on the morning of 23 July after two vegetation fires broke out next to the track near Calatayud (Zaragoza). Infrastructure manager Adif cut traction power at 07:18 h to allow firefighters to enter the right-of-way safely; services began rolling again at 08:27 h, but 14 trains arrived in Barcelona Sants and Madrid-Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes with delays of between 30 minutes and 1 hour 40 minutes. Although the interruption was brief, it hit a corridor that normally carries more than 30,000 passengers a day, including hundreds of corporate commuters, and connects with onward services to Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona and France. Trackside fires have become increasingly common as Spain endures a third summer heat-wave, forcing operators Renfe, Iryo and Ouigo to refine contingency plans and improve real-time passenger notifications. Adif said that early detection sensors installed after the 2025 wildfire season allowed control-centre staff to isolate the affected sections quickly. However, rail-user groups demanded additional preventive vegetation clearing and called on the Ministry of Transport to accelerate deployment of fibre-optic “listening” cables that can pinpoint ignition sources within seconds. For mobility managers, the incident is a reminder to include alternative itineraries—such as the Air Shuttle between the two cities and flexible remote-work protocols—in travel policies during Spain’s peak fire season (July-September). Companies should also ensure that tickets are booked in “flex” classes that allow free re-routing on later trains when disruptions strike. The episode comes barely a week after Adif published its 2027 summer capacity proposal, which foresees a 9 % increase in paths on the Madrid-Barcelona corridor. Industry observers warn that without parallel investment in climate-resilience measures, the extra capacity could be offset by more frequent weather-related stoppages.
