Overnight disruption at Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) appears to be over—at least for now. After more than a week of walk-outs that grounded dozens of late-evening and early-morning flights, the unions representing Skeyes air-traffic controllers agreed in the early hours of 23 September to suspend their industrial action. The decision follows an offer by Belgium’s Federal Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke to appoint an external mediator to resolve a long-running dispute over night-shift allowances. The strike, which ran nightly from 22:00 to 08:00, forced airlines such as Ryanair, Wizz Air and TUI fly Belgium to cancel or divert hundreds of services, playing havoc with passenger itineraries and crew rotations. Travel-management companies estimate that some 25,000 travellers—many of them business passengers using Charleroi as a low-cost alternative to Brussels Zaventem—have been affected since the walk-out began last Wednesday. Airlines now face an operational scramble to reposition aircraft and crew in order to restore normal schedules. At the heart of the dispute is pay parity. Controllers at Charleroi argue that the planned shift of operations to a remote digital tower in Namur, which will also manage Liège Airport, will effectively merge the two workforces; they therefore want night-shift premiums aligned with those already paid at Liège. Skeyes management insists the current allowance is “competitive,” but has agreed to open talks. For mobility managers, the suspension offers immediate relief but not certainty. Mediation is expected to last several weeks and unions have warned that industrial action could resume if negotiations stall. Companies with travellers routing through Charleroi should continue to monitor flight status closely, build slack into connections, and keep contingency budgets for last-minute re-routing. Travellers already holding disrupted tickets are advised to claim EU261 compensation where applicable and retain boarding passes and receipts. Longer term, the episode underscores the vulnerability of Belgium’s secondary airports to labour unrest—an issue that may gain urgency as digital tower technology consolidates control centres and alters traditional pay structures.
