France notifies new six-month extension of internal Schengen border checks to 30 April 2027
The European Commission’s updated list of temporary Schengen border controls, published on 11 October, shows that France will prolong checks at all land, sea and air frontiers with Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain and Italy from 1 November 2026 through 30 April 2027. Paris cites persistent jihadist threats, rising antisemitic attacks, migrant-smuggling networks near Calais, and the need to secure major events such as the Paris Peace Forum (10-11 November) as grounds for the extension under Articles 25 & 28 of the Schengen Borders Code. While border officers have been stamping passports and scanning biometrics since the Entry/Exit System (EES) went live in April, the re-introduced controls allow France to maintain mobile patrols on cross-border trains and highways and to conduct systematic ID checks on certain flights. The Interior Ministry notes that 28,000 individuals were denied entry or placed in accelerated asylum procedures during the previous six-month period. For multinational firms relocating staff to France—or dispatching French employees into neighbouring states—the move means longer queues at minor road crossings and occasional spot-checks on company vehicles. Logistics providers moving goods under AEO/Trusted Trader regimes should carry up-to-date CMRs and driver employment documents. HR teams issuing assignment letters must inform employees that a French residence permit or EU Laissez-Passer may still be requested when re-entering, even from another Schengen state. Travel managers should adjust door-to-door timings: Eurostar and Thalys trains have so far absorbed the added checks, but regional TER services crossing to Luxembourg or Italy experience delays of up to 15 minutes when patrols board. Airlines operating wet-lease shuttles between Paris and Geneva or Milan report average turnaround extensions of six minutes, which could cascade during peak winter slots. Policy-wise, the extension underscores lingering security worries less than three years before the 2027 presidential election and just 18 months after France fully implemented EES. Observers fear that repeated renewals may normalise “temporary” controls, eroding Schengen’s frictionless promise and adding hidden costs to corporate mobility programmes.
