Finnair white-collar union terminates collective agreement, raising strike risk for 2027 winter
On 12 October, trade union Ammattiliitto Pro announced it has terminated the collective labour agreement covering Finnair’s administrative and technical white-collar staff, effective 31 January 2027. The move starts a mandatory bargaining countdown and opens the door to industrial action should talks with employer organisation Palta fail to reach a new deal. The current contract, signed in 2024, governs roughly 1,700 Finnair employees in areas such as ground operations, engineering support and customer service—all vital for flight punctuality. By cancelling now, the union gains leverage to negotiate improved pay and working-time flexibility amid robust post-pandemic traffic recovery and high inflation. For business-travel planners the development is an early warning of potential labour unrest overlapping with the busy first-quarter conference season of 2027. Although any strike is months away, past Finnair stoppages have led to hundreds of flight cancellations affecting long-haul connections through Helsinki’s hub. Companies with corporate fare deals should monitor negotiations and consider adding interline or rail contingencies in travel policies. Mobility departments relocating staff via Helsinki may also face scheduling uncertainties if maintenance operations are disrupted. Finnair, for its part, said in a brief statement that it “remains committed to constructive dialogue” and aims to finalise a competitive, cost-neutral agreement before year-end. The airline is already under cost pressure from jet-fuel volatility and the phased roll-out of the EU’s Emissions Trading System for aviation. A prolonged dispute could hamper its ability to invest in new routes and digital passenger-experience upgrades planned for 2027.
