VR opens sales for summer–autumn 2027 night trains, signalling confidence in post-pandemic rail demand
Finland’s state-owned rail operator VR announced on 12 October that night-train tickets for the period 26 April–3 October 2027 are now on sale, giving holiday-makers and business travellers nearly 18 months of planning horizon. The release covers peak dates such as Midsummer and Lapland’s autumn foliage season, when sleeper services between Helsinki and the Arctic north typically sell out within hours. The early launch is part of VR’s strategy to rebuild long-distance passenger volumes after the pandemic and to compete more aggressively with airlines on domestic routes. 2026 has already seen ridership rebound to 94 percent of 2019 levels, helped by hybrid-work commuters and a surge in eco-conscious leisure travel. By putting 2027 berths on the market, VR aims to lock in demand from tour operators, conference organisers and employers arranging staff rotation to remote mining, energy and data-centre projects in Lapland. Night trains remain a keystone of Finland’s internal mobility network, connecting southern population centres with sparsely populated regions that lack frequent air service. The 2027 timetable will again include car-carrying wagons, allowing families and expatriates to transport vehicles for extended stays. VR says it has upgraded onboard Wi-Fi and added flexible workspace cabins, responding to feedback from international assignees who combine overnight rail travel with remote work days. Travel-management companies welcome the long booking window, which enables negotiated corporate fares and better budgeting for relocation packages. However, they caution that cross-border traffic to Sweden—re-established in August 2026 on the Tornio–Haparanda line—remains capacity-constrained, and advise early reservations for employees transiting via Sweden’s northern hubs. VR adds that ticket vending machines will be retired nationwide by November 2026, so travellers should familiarise themselves with mobile and web booking tools. For global-mobility professionals, the message is clear: Finland’s overnight rail is back and modernising. Companies relocating staff to Oulu, Rovaniemi or Kemijärvi can once again offer the sleeper-train option as a low-carbon alternative to domestic flights, potentially reducing travel-budget emissions and aligning with corporate sustainability goals.
