Border Chaos: CBP Computer Failure Brings San Ysidro Crossing to a Stand-Still
Holiday weekend traffic at the world’s busiest land border crossing ground to a halt Saturday night, 11 October, after a processing-system failure hit U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) booths at both San Ysidro and nearby Otay Mesa. Local outlet Agencia Fronteriza de Noticias first reported that officers stopped processing north-bound vehicles around 8:30 p.m. when inspection monitors froze. Drivers stuck in the queue told reporters they waited more than two hours without updates; some turned back to Tijuana to wait out the outage. The timing could not have been worse. Columbus Day is traditionally one of the heaviest cross-border shopping weekends of the year. Earlier in the afternoon CBP-posted waits had already hit 150 minutes in San Ysidro’s general lanes and 120 minutes in the Ready Lane. Live data from independent tracker WaitTimeReport.com still showed 80- to 110-minute vehicle delays late Sunday morning, well above the 45- to 60-minute holiday average of the past three years. Pedestrian lanes were less affected, holding at roughly 20 minutes. CBP did not issue an official statement, leaving travellers and Mexican media scrambling for guidance. The agency’s only public data, its Border Wait Times feed, continued to publish stale numbers throughout the outage. Industry sources say the failure appears limited to the primary-inspection workstation network; secondary-inspection and SENTRI systems remained online. A similar outage at JFK Airport in 2025 was traced to a contractor software push that corrupted authentication certificates. For cross-border employers the disruption was a reminder of the fragility of the staffing pipeline that keeps maquiladora and San Diego-tech workers moving daily. Manufacturers along the I-5 corridor report absenteeism spikes of up to 15 percent on long-wait days, driving up overtime costs. Some have begun trialling charter buses with pre-screened employees to take advantage of the pedestrian crossing, which usually recovers faster after a system crash. Until CBP clarifies the root cause and mitigation steps, mobility managers should advise employees to check the agency’s wait-time site before departure and to carry sufficient water and fuel. Firms with time-critical shipments should consider routing via Otay Mesa Commercial, which has more robust redundancy and can shift traffic to Tecate if needed.
