Renfe has begun the second phase of its summer engineering works on the Madrid Cercanías network, closing the busy C-5 corridor between Villaverde Alto and Embajadores from Thursday, 23 July until 16 August. The shutdown eliminates all direct commuter-rail access to the capital’s main hub, Atocha Cercanías, forcing the 180,000 daily passengers who normally travel through the section to reroute via Metro lines or other Cercanías services. According to Renfe’s service bulletin, trains from the western branch (Móstoles-El Soto/Alcorcón) will now terminate at Villaverde Alto, while services from the southern branch (Humanes–Leganés–Fuenlabrada) will end at San Cristóbal industrial station. Passengers needing to reach the business districts around Méndez Álvaro or Atocha must transfer to Metro line 3, the C-4 Cercanías line, or long-distance services. Replacement buses have not been provided because parallel public-transport alternatives exist, a decision that has drawn criticism from the regional employers’ association CEIM and several multinational firms located near Méndez Álvaro. Renfe says the blockade is essential to renew track, catenary and signalling assets dating from the 1980s and to prepare for the introduction of ERTMS commuter signalling in 2027. Work will also lengthen platforms to accommodate the new 100-metre Stadler double-deck EMUs on order. The company chose late July and early August when commuter volumes drop by roughly 25 % thanks to staggered summer holidays, but human-resources managers warn that the cut still overlaps with the end-of-month salary-close period for finance teams and the annual “operación salida” of business travellers heading to the coast. Corporate mobility programmes should advise employees to add at least 20 minutes to their journey time if travelling to Atocha or the Méndez Álvaro coach and inter-city bus stations. Employers that subsidise monthly Cercanías passes should note that Renfe will not refund partial months, although employees with long-distance Abonos (multi-journey passes) may claim compensation under EU Regulation 2021/782 if they experience delays exceeding 60 minutes. The works highlight a broader challenge for Spain’s ageing suburban networks. While high-speed rail attracts headlines, daily mobility for local staff often depends on infrastructure that is now 30–40 years old. Similar closures on the C-3 and C-4 lines earlier this month produced significant timetable instability, underlining the importance of multi-modal contingency planning for duty-of-care and productivity.
