The cancellation process cannot be completed at the airport and typically requires a minimum of 24 hours’ processing time, meaning last-minute travellers risk being turned back at immigration control. Holders of standard biometric passports are unaffected, but those renewing or replacing lost passports need to plan ahead. The advisory underscores broader enforcement trends: UAE exit systems cross-check residency status, and an active permit linked to a cancelled passport triggers a “block” in the immigration database. Airlines have increasingly denied boarding when such mismatches appear in Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) feeds. For multinational companies managing German assignees — or any foreign employees using emergency documents — the update acts as a reminder to align HR mobility calendars with passport-renewal cycles and to budget extra lead-time for a “visa voiding” letter from GDRFA. Travel-risk teams should also refresh employee briefings to include the 24-hour waiting period and the stipulation that the process cannot be done airside. Failure to cancel residency properly can result not only in denied exit but also in administrative fines and complications when applying for future UAE visas.
