A signalling malfunction on the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link caused significant disruption early on Sunday, 27 September. According to the Transport Department, northbound services from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station were halted for about 45 minutes, delaying 15 scheduled trains bound for Futian, Shenzhenbei and Guangzhou South. The fault—detected shortly after 08:00—triggered automatic safety protocols that required trains already in motion to dwell at stations until engineers confirmed track integrity. Services progressively resumed at 08:55, but residual delays of 20–30 minutes persisted through mid-morning. Passenger queues quickly built up inside the subterranean terminus. MTR Corp deployed additional staff to distribute water and manage crowd flow, while announcements advised travellers with tight onward connections to consider the East Rail Line via Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau. No injuries were reported. The incident came at an awkward time: Mid-Autumn weekend traffic was already running above seasonal norms, and business travellers heading to Monday meetings on the mainland faced itinerary changes. Freight operators using the same corridor reported minor knock-on effects, as priority was given to clearing the passenger backlog. Rail engineers have launched an investigation into the root cause, focusing on a trackside signal relay between West Kowloon and Futian. Industry analysts note that the Express Rail Link has maintained a 99 per cent on-time record since service resumption in 2023, but stress that contingency planning—such as flexible ticket endorsement between rail and coach operators—remains essential for corporate mobility programmes.
