Immigration Department rebrands mobile app and streamlines pre-arrival e-Channel enrolment
The Hong Kong Immigration Department quietly pushed a major update to its contact-less clearance platform on 5 October, renaming the “Contactless e-Channel” app to “Hong Kong e-Channel” and adding a full English interface aimed at frequent business visitors. The upgrade lets eligible travellers—holders of biometric passports from 53 jurisdictions and top-tier members of Hong Kong-based talent schemes—complete facial-biometric enrolment, declaration of health, and electronic signature capture before boarding their flight. On arrival, users simply scan a dynamic QR code at designated e-Channels, reducing average clearance time from 45 seconds to under 20, according to departmental trials conducted at the airport and Shenzhen Bay control point. The ImmD said the change supports its target of processing 80 percent of all passenger movements through automated channels by 2027. For employers, the self-service option removes the need to escort short-term assignees to an enrolment counter after landing—a common bottleneck for regional headquarters rotating staff in and out of Hong Kong. Mobility teams can now circulate a step-by-step guide and complete enrolment during pre-trip orientation calls, ensuring talent walks straight through upon first entry. The rebrand also folds in the new “Go Hong Kong” pre-arrival visitor app launched on 2 October, giving the city a single front-door for digital immigration services. Planned Phase 2 functions include automated notification when a traveller’s permitted stay is about to expire and one-click extension requests for those on the Top Talent Pass Scheme. Industry groups welcomed the move but urged authorities to publish an API so airlines can embed the QR enrolment process in their own apps. The Asia Pacific Travel Association said such integration would help Hong Kong keep pace with Singapore’s Changi, which already offers in-app SmartGate enrolment for KrisFlyer members.
