Airport ground-handling strikes continue to snarl Spanish travel on 7 October 2026
Travellers moving through Spain’s two busiest gateways face ongoing industrial action just as the autumn meetings season peaks. Strike-tracking portal Strike Tracker confirms that on Wednesday 7 October 2026 two aviation labour disputes are active: • Barcelona-El Prat (BCN): an indefinite strike by Groundforce ramp-handling staff, called by the CGT union, has been in force since 4 August. Although minimum-service decrees guarantee 90 % of scheduled flights, baggage delivery times regularly stretch beyond 90 minutes during peak waves, and tight connections are particularly vulnerable. • Madrid-Barajas (MAD): maintenance technicians for the SATE automated baggage-handling system, represented by the ASC union, are refusing overtime five days a week until 30 November. The action, labelled ‘minor’ by Strike Tracker, mainly causes early-morning belt stoppages that ripple into mid-day departures. No walk-outs are planned today by air-traffic controllers or the state airports authority Aena, but mobility managers should note that regional bus and tram strikes begin tomorrow, 8 October, in Murcia and Barcelona, potentially complicating last-mile airport access. Airlines operating in Spain have issued blanket rebooking waivers for travel through 10 October, allowing business passengers to switch to earlier flights or reroute via Valencia or Málaga at no cost. Lounges in BCN Terminal 1 report overcrowding as premium travellers arrive earlier to hedge against delays. Companies moving time-critical equipment should consider courier services with ‘airside escort’ options, as landside pick-up windows are unpredictable. While the disputes are rooted in wage indexing and staffing ratios, negotiations at Barcelona are stalled: management’s latest 4 % pay-rise offer was rejected on 5 October. At Madrid, talks continue, and insiders suggest a compromise on shift staffing could end the action before the All Saints holiday weekend if ratified by 18 October. Until then, travellers should pack essentials in carry-on and allow generous buffers between meetings and return flights.
