Spanish airports gear up for Puente del Pilar with 27,744 flights and record seat supply
Spain’s airport operator Aena has confirmed that its 46-airport network will handle 27,744 commercial flights between Friday 9 and Monday 12 October, the long weekend that culminates in the Fiesta Nacional bank holiday. Friday alone will see more than 7,000 take-offs and landings, 222 more than during the same festive period in 2025. Madrid-Barajas remains the busiest hub with 4,945 movements, followed by Barcelona-El Prat (4,303) and Palma de Mallorca (3,574). Airlines are matching the extra slots with additional capacity. Ryanair, the largest carrier in the Spanish market, expects to transport almost 800,000 passengers over the four-day period, while Iberia and Vueling have scheduled wide-body aircraft on traditionally high-demand domestic routes such as Madrid–Tenerife and Barcelona–Seville. Aena says the strongest growth is concentrated in leisure-oriented airports such as Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante and the Canary Islands, evidence that pent-up demand for short-haul getaways remains robust despite economic headwinds and high fuel prices. The operator has activated its peak-season contingency plan, which includes the deployment of extra security staff, bilingual passenger-service agents, biometric self-boarding lanes at Madrid and Barcelona, and real-time passenger-flow monitoring to avoid bottlenecks at security filters. For corporate mobility managers the figures signal tighter seat inventory and the likelihood of higher airfares on trunk routes. Companies with last-minute travel needs should consider rail alternatives—Renfe has released 403,000 extra high-speed and long-distance seats for the weekend—or virtual meeting options. Travellers connecting through Madrid should allow additional buffer time: Barajas will process more than 1.28 million passengers over the long weekend, according to Aena’s traffic forecast. The Puente del Pilar operation is also a stress test for Spain’s post-pandemic airport digitalisation drive. Queue-time data from Aena’s app and website will be scrutinised by the Ministry of Transport as it prepares the 2027–2031 Airport Regulation Document (DORA III), which will set investment and service-quality targets for the next five years.
