Government details phased transport plan for 12 October switchover to new Huanggang Port
Hong Kong authorities have issued a detailed operational blueprint for the early-morning hand-over that will transfer all cross-boundary buses, minibuses and private cars from Lok Ma Chau Control Point to the new Huanggang Port on 12 October. At 6:30 a.m., immigration and customs counters at the existing building will close and traffic will be diverted via signage and police escorts to the redeveloped facility, which becomes Hong Kong’s only 24-hour land crossing. To minimise disruption, the last north-bound “Yellow Bus” shuttle from San Tin Transport Interchange will depart between 6:15 and 6:20 a.m. for Lok Ma Chau. South-bound services will continue until every traveller already inside the old building has cleared. Five franchised bus routes (B10–B14) and three green-minibus routes (44B series and 78) will then launch direct to the new port, with spare vehicles and police traffic teams stationed nearby to deal with queues. Customs officers have installed “joint one-stop” vehicle lanes that integrate thermal checks, document scans and biometric capture so drivers present only one piece of ID. Road-works teams have re-painted lane markings on San Sham Road and Lok Ma Chau Bridge, while water-filled barriers will funnel all Shenzhen-bound vehicles to the new entrance. The Security Bureau will activate its Emergency Monitoring and Support Centre and open a Joint Command Post inside the new port to coordinate 11 departments. Real-time passenger and traffic data will be fed to a dashboard so that contingencies—such as using the Lok Ma Chau Northbound Vehicle Holding Area—can be triggered within minutes. Employers with shuttles for factory visits in Shenzhen’s Futian district are being advised to brief drivers on the new routing, update staff travel advisories and allow additional transit time during the first week. Logistics firms should verify that RFID permits for cross-boundary trucks have been re-registered for the new control point.
