Austria’s Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) have formally launched the long-awaited modernisation of Vienna’s Verbindungsbahn corridor after winning final court approval. At a joint press conference on 11 May, ÖBB infrastructure chief Judith Engel confirmed that main construction will begin in September 2026, but preparatory works will already suspend large sections of the S80 commuter line from 4 July. During the summer, the Stammstrecke between Praterstern and Floridsdorf will be closed, followed by a second major blockade between Hauptbahnhof/St. Marx and Praterstern from 7 September 2026 until at least October 2027. Service on the S80 will shrink to a shuttle between Aspern and Meidling, with rail-replacement buses bridging gaps. The project will lift the line onto an elevated alignment, remove level crossings and introduce a 15-minute interval service, benefiting more than 20,000 daily riders once completed. For mobility planners the pain comes first. Vienna’s booming life-science cluster in St. Marx and the tech parks of Meidling rely on the S80 to funnel employees from western districts; companies are already negotiating staggered shifts and remote-work options. Hotels near the Schönbrunn Palace conference quarter expect heightened taxi demand as international delegates avoid disrupted rail legs. ÖBB will honour Klimaticket passes on the substitute buses and on diverted S-Bahn routes, but warns that journey times could double at peak. The €1.8 billion upgrade is part of Austria’s wider Zielnetz 2040 rail strategy, which aims to absorb forecast 30 percent passenger growth and shift freight off congested urban roads. By elevating tracks and adding the new Wien Hietzinger Hauptstraße stop, planners hope to unlock brownfield redevelopment in Hietzing while reducing barrier effects for pedestrians and cyclists. Yet neighbourhood groups still fear construction noise and visual impact; ÖBB has pledged round-the-clock noise monitoring and compensation funds. For now, Vienna joins London, Paris and Munich in demonstrating that mega-rail refits, though disruptive, remain central to sustainable metropolitan mobility.
