Skyguide, the state-mandated provider of air-navigation services in Switzerland, announced on 19 May that it has opened a consultation on shedding up to 220 positions at its Geneva and Dübendorf centres between late 2026 and mid-2027. While the company insists that licensed air-traffic controllers are exempt, unions warn that deep reductions in engineering, systems support and training staff could erode redundancy in the network just as traffic is forecast to exceed pre-pandemic levels. Skyguide cites rising personnel and technology costs, tougher EU efficiency targets and stagnant user-fee revenues as drivers of the restructuring. Personnel expenses reached CHF 382 million in 2025 against total expenditure of CHF 576 million. The job losses would come in two waves—up to 90 posts this autumn and a further 130 next year—unless alternatives such as early retirement or internal transfers are found. Airlines that depend on Switzerland’s upper-airspace corridor, notably SWISS, easyJet Europe and Lufthansa, fear that a thinner technical workforce could slow the roll-out of the new Virtual Centre concept that is meant to allow seamless delegation of sectors between Zurich and Geneva. Businesses relying on Geneva or Zurich for late-night executive flights worry about possible slot restrictions if Skyguide is forced to scale back capacity during staffing transitions. The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) says it is monitoring the plan to ensure that Switzerland continues to meet its binding capacity and delay targets under the EU’s Single European Sky Performance Scheme. Industry consultants advise multinationals to map alternative routings for critical cargo and crew rotations during the two-year downsizing window and to keep contingency budgets for potential en-route delay charges.
