Cyprus gains new long-haul options as EU–Kazakhstan air-transport agreement enters into force
A little-noticed note published on 23 June by Cyprus Business News confirms that the Republic is now covered by the EU’s horizontal air-services agreement with Kazakhstan. The deal, ratified earlier this spring and formally effective from 23 June, replaces obsolete bilateral accords and immediately authorises EU-licensed carriers—including Cyprus Airways and Wizz Air Cyprus—to operate passenger and cargo flights between any airport in Cyprus and any point in Kazakhstan, with full fifth-freedom rights beyond Kazakhstan. Air-service agreements normally take years to renegotiate; Nicosia benefited from its EU Presidency role in shepherding the file to completion. Kazakh flag-carrier Air Astana has already requested slots at Larnaca for a twice-weekly summer service from Almaty, while Cyprus Airways signalled interest in linking Larnaca with Almaty via Tbilisi using an A220 to tap the growing leisure and business-migration market.

For travellers and corporate mobility planners anticipating these new routes, VisaHQ can streamline the necessary entry clearances for both Cyprus-based staff heading to Kazakhstan and Kazakh visitors bound for the island. The company’s Cyprus portal (https://www.visahq.com/cyprus/) offers up-to-date visa requirements, electronic applications and express processing options, ensuring passengers are compliance-ready as soon as the inaugural flights launch.

For multinationals, the pact offers new cargo capacity for time-sensitive pharma and electronics flows moving between East Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, potentially reducing routing via Istanbul or Dubai. Business-traveller itineraries to Central-Asia’s energy sector should also shorten by several hours. From a compliance perspective, airlines must still satisfy Cyprus’ enhanced safety-oversight regime and EU ETS obligations, but slot allocation and capacity caps embedded in the old Cyprus–Kazakhstan bilateral are scrapped. Travel-management companies say that additional long-haul links could help Cyprus’ effort to become a base for distributed teams serving Central-Asian markets. The agreement also dovetails with plans under the forthcoming EU External Aviation Policy to extend Single European Sky performance rules to partner countries—something that may further cut delays on the busy Caucasus flight paths. Civil-aviation officials in Nicosia expect first flights in the IATA Winter 2026/27 season once traffic rights are formally notified and security vetting completed. A public consultation on potential night-noise implications for Larnaca residents is scheduled for July.
