Border checks trigger fresh wave of Eurostar delays at Paris Gare du Nord
Eurostar issued an operational alert on Thursday morning warning of "significant delays" on departures from Paris Gare du Nord after European Union border-control procedures overwhelmed the juxtaposed control zone. Trains 9116, 9145, 9060 and 9022 were cancelled outright, while multiple services to London, Brussels and Amsterdam left more than 60 minutes behind schedule. The operator cites “EU frontier controls” as the primary cause, an increasingly common phrasing since France activated full biometric capture under the new Entry/Exit System earlier this year. According to passenger reports, only four manual booths and six e-gates were open during the 07:00–10:00 peak, creating queues that snaked back into the main concourse. The backlog was compounded by an unrelated power-supply issue in the Channel Tunnel that forced speed restrictions on train 9027. Eurostar’s contingency measures included re-booking affected customers, relaxing ticket-change rules and dispatching on-board staff to provide refreshments in the waiting area. Business-class passengers were redirected to the ‘Eurostar Premier’ lounge, but many corporate travellers missed connections to regional UK services. Freight services using the same tunnel reported minor knock-on delays of up to 30 minutes. For mobility managers the incident is a reminder that Paris–London rail remains vulnerable to border-control bottlenecks even outside holiday peaks. Companies should build a minimum 90-minute buffer between an employee’s scheduled Eurostar arrival and onward UK domestic meetings. The alert also underscores the value of enrolling frequent travellers in Eurostar’s SmartCheck facial-verification pilot, which can shave several minutes off the exit process when functioning. Eurostar says additional e-gates are due to be installed by November, but warns that further disruption is possible whenever UK school breaks or major Paris trade fairs coincide with French border-police staffing shortages.
