Eurostar Flags Week-Long Engineering Delays on French Network; Advises Extra Buffer Time
Eurostar issued a live service bulletin on Tuesday, 15 September at 17:40 CET warning of “possible delays of up to 30 minutes” on trains crossing northern France between 14 and 20 September because of SNCF engineering works. The carrier is also managing crowding-related hold-ups at Paris Gare du Nord and London St Pancras. Although most trains are still operating, several services were briefly delayed or reseated after rolling-stock substitutions. Eurostar reminded passengers that ticket gates close 30 minutes before departure (15 minutes for Premier) and urged travellers to arrive “with plenty of time to spare” to complete French passport control and UK Border Force checks, which have lengthened since biometric EES trials began. Travel-management companies report that missed connections have already triggered re-routing costs for high-value executives heading to meetings in Brussels and Amsterdam. Under EU rail passenger rights (Regulation 1371/2007), delays above 60 minutes unlock compensation of 25 % of the ticket price, but Eurostar is proactively offering free exchanges within seven days. With Paris Fashion Week (23–30 September) and the Ryder Cup in Rome driving cross-Channel demand, forward-loads on peak-hour services are above 90 %. Companies should consider booking flexible fares or routing via Lille Europe, where border formalities occur in Brussels rather than Paris, reducing congestion. Eurostar says it will update the bulletin daily; mobility managers can subscribe to station-specific SMS alerts. Longer-term, Eurostar is re-engineering its timetable ahead of full Entry/Exit System deployment in 2027, which is expected to add fingerprint capture to existing exit-stamp procedures. Business travellers should anticipate further “soft-launch” stress tests this winter.
