Dutch Interior Minister Femke van der Plas confirmed late on 24 September that the temporary border-control regime introduced in December 2024 on the land frontiers with Belgium and Germany will expire on 30 September. From 1 October, inspections will again fall under the Mobile Security Surveillance (Mobiel Toezicht Veiligheid, MTV) framework, which allows the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee to carry out risk-based checks anywhere within a 20-kilometre zone of the frontier rather than at fixed booths. The MTV model, which the Netherlands used before the COVID-19 pandemic, relies on intelligence-led stop-and-search operations of cars, buses, trains and, where necessary, inland waterways and regional airports. According to the Dutch cabinet, the return to mobile controls should maintain pressure on people-smuggling networks while removing routine bottlenecks at crossing points such as the E19 at Hazeldonk and the A2 at Eijsden. During the 22 months of fixed controls, officers refused entry to roughly 600 foreigners and detained 270 suspects for document fraud and migrant smuggling. Logistics associations had complained, however, that queues of lorries and coaches sometimes stretched for several kilometres, costing operators time and fuel. For Belgian businesses, the change means that cross-border staff shuttles and just-in-time supply chains—particularly in the Antwerp–Eindhoven high-tech corridor—should face fewer unpredictable delays. Belgian commuters working in the Dutch Limburg logistics cluster will still encounter random stops but can expect a smoother drive at peak hours. Employers are advised to remind third-country national employees to carry passports and residence cards, as MTV teams may board company coaches away from the actual border. The Marechaussee stresses that the expanded MTV remit comes with higher quotas for checks on trains and aircraft. Although Brussels Airport is outside the 20-kilometre zone, passengers on Thalys and Intercity Brussels services heading into the Netherlands could see sporadic on-board ID inspections. Businesses organising incentive travel or cargo routings through Dutch hubs in early October should therefore factor in spot-check contingencies.
