Paris public-transport strike enters day 4, causing widespread commuter delays
An unlimited strike by CGT-RATP workers that began at 19:00 on 28 September has rolled into 1 October with significant disruption across the Paris metro, RER suburban rail and bus networks. Strike-tracker data show reduced frequencies on 10 metro lines and partial RER A and B closures during the morning peak. While minimum-service laws guarantee roughly one train in three, crowding and extended journey times of up to 45 minutes have been reported. Root causes. The walkout centres on wage indexation and roster flexibility ahead of the 2027 service-contract renewal between the State and Île-de-France Mobilités. Unions also oppose the outsourcing of bus routes mandated by EU competition law. Talks mediated by the regional prefect failed on 30 September, and no new meeting is scheduled. Impact on business travellers. • Connections between Charles-de-Gaulle airport and central Paris via RER B are running at 50 % capacity; taxis and ride-shares have introduced surge pricing. • Eurostar and TGV services remain unaffected but Gare du Nord transfers are taking longer. • Events at La Défense and Paris Expo Porte de Versailles report attendee no-shows of 12 %, according to the convention bureau. Mitigation advice. Employers should authorise taxi expenses during peak hours, encourage tele-work where possible and remind staff that Navigo top-ups may be unreliable after a separate two-hour outage of IDFM payment servers on Thursday morning. Visitors can use tramway lines T3a/b and bike-share services, which remain operational. Outlook. The strike is officially ‘unlimited’; insiders suggest it could last until at least 5 October unless management agrees to reopen salary talks. A broader national public-sector strike is scheduled for 13 October, raising the possibility of cumulative disruption.
