Local media outlet Cadena SER reported on the morning of 9 October that Iberia (operated by Air Nostrum) will cancel its late-evening Jerez-de-la-Frontera–Madrid return rotation from the start of the winter timetable. The last Madrid departure will move from 19:40 to 15:45, while the final Jerez flight northbound shifts from 21:30 to 17:40. Provincial business associations and the PSOE have condemned the decision, warning that same-day return options are essential for small-and-medium enterprises in Cádiz that rely on Madrid for client meetings and onward long-haul connections. Trade-show organisers at Jerez’s IFECA convention centre fear the reduced schedule will deter delegates, forcing them to use Seville or Málaga airports two hours away. Iberia argues that passenger numbers in the late-evening slot fell below economic viability after the introduction of Renfe’s high-speed Avlo services, but critics counter that air capacity grew 15 % year-on-year up to August. They urge the Andalusian regional government to negotiate a Public Service Obligation (PSO) to preserve connectivity, noting the airport’s strategic role in supporting the nearby naval and aerospace clusters. For mobility managers, the cut means that travellers heading to Latin America via Madrid may need to overnight or drive to Seville for late-evening departures. Companies with time-sensitive assignments should re-evaluate preferred-supplier arrangements and consider booking fully flexible rail fares as back-up. The episode highlights a broader trend of regional-route consolidation as Iberia concentrates capacity on higher-yield leisure destinations—a pattern that can erode secondary-city competitiveness and increase total travel-programme costs.
