GDL strike hits Saarbrücken tram-trains through 31 October, minor but disruptive for cross-border commuters
Strike-tracker data confirm that the train-drivers’ union GDL continues its rolling industrial action against Saarbahn until 31 October 2026. Although classed as “minor”, the stoppage reduces peak-hour frequencies on the Saarbrücken tram-train network that links Germany’s Saarland with the French town of Sarreguemines. The dispute centres on overtime compensation and a proposed two-tier wage scale for newly hired drivers. Management says it cannot match the 11 percent pay rise conceded by Deutsche Bahn earlier this year without fare hikes or state subsidies. Drivers are instead walking out in four-hour blocks across different depots, making timetables unpredictable. For mobility and relocation managers the impact is felt most by cross-border staff working at Saarbrücken’s automative-supplier belt and at the Eurodistrict SaarMoselle offices. Companies have begun reimbursing affected employees for car-parking fees or encouraging remote work, but last-minute service cancellations still pose attendance risks. Travel consultants warn that the strike also complicates onward connections to long-distance ICE trains at Saarbrücken Hbf, which many France-based commuters use to reach Frankfurt Airport. Alternate routes via Forbach-Metz are available but add up to 40 minutes. With no fresh bargaining dates scheduled, observers expect political pressure to rise; Saarland’s transport minister has hinted at compulsory arbitration if the strike spills into November school holidays.
