Dentists to Receive Bonus Express Entry Points Under Canada’s New High-Wage Occupations Grid
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released the detailed wage-tier list that will power the biggest overhaul of Express Entry since 2015. Beginning November 3 2026, candidates with Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer in high-wage occupations will receive up to 100 additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. Dentists (NOC 31110) and dental hygienists/therapists (NOC 32111) land in the middle, 1.5-times-median wage tier, worth 40 bonus points for a year of qualifying Canadian experience or 70 points for a valid job offer. IRCC emphasises that the wage tier is based on the national median for each occupation, not the individual’s salary, making the benefit broadly accessible to internationally trained professionals already practising in Canada. The same update removes the labour-market impact assessment (LMIA) requirement for job-offer points, a long-requested simplification for employers desperate for regulated health-care talent. For employers, the policy lowers administrative friction and may accelerate permanent-residence pathways for foreign-trained dentists filling shortages in underserved regions. Provincial regulators remain gatekeepers on licensing standards, so employers will still need to coordinate credential recognition and language requirements. Prospective applicants should update their Express Entry profiles before November 3 – incomplete job-offer fields will block the bonus. IRCC systems will automatically recalculate scores on the effective date, meaning many dentists could see their CRS jump overnight. With category-based health-occupation draws already frequent, competition for an invitation to apply could tighten quickly. The change is part of a broader government strategy to tilt economic immigration toward sectors with persistent labour gaps while curbing overall temporary-resident growth. Health-care occupations dominate all three wage tiers, signalling that Ottawa sees immigration as a core tool to stabilise Canada’s strained health system.
