Suomi.fi mobile ID hit by partial outage on 14 September, affecting foreigners using e-Authorisations
The Digital and Population Data Services Agency issued a disruption notice on 14 September stating that identification via the Suomi.fi mobile application was ‘only partially available’. The glitch, traced to a token-refresh error in Android 14, prevented some users from logging in to government services, including Migri’s Enter Finland residence-permit portal and the Tax Administration’s MyTax service. Although the outage lasted less than six hours, it disproportionately affected non-resident users abroad who rely on Suomi.fi to submit additional documents for pending work and study permits. Several international students told local media they were unable to upload proof of funds before the weekly processing cut-off. Corporate HR teams also felt the pinch. Companies onboarding non-EU hires through the Fast-Track D-visa channel had to switch to paper power-of-attorney forms or postpone mandate creation in the e-Authorisations system, causing brief delays in residence-permit applications. The Agency deployed a hot-fix by 18:00 EEST and advised users to update the app and clear cached credentials. A permanent patch will arrive in version 2.4 next week. To build resilience, officials announced accelerated plans to integrate backup authentication using EU-wide digital wallets when Finland’s new Digital Identity Act enters into force on 1 October. For global mobility managers the incident is a reminder to maintain alternative login methods—such as Finnish online banking credentials or mobile-certificate SIMs—when handling time-critical filings for expatriate staff.
