WestJet Issues Flexible Rebooking for Tokyo Flights Ahead of Tropical Storm
WestJet updated its traveller-advisory portal late on September 16, offering fee-free changes and cancellations for guests booked on flights to or from Tokyo (Narita) between September 20-21 as Tropical Storm Koinu bears down on Japan. Although the carrier does not operate direct Canada-Tokyo service, many Canadians connect via its trans-Pacific codeshare partners, making the policy relevant for corporate itineraries routed through WestJet-ticketed legs. Eligible passengers can rebook within 14 days of original travel with no fare difference, provided the origin and destination remain unchanged. Those whose trips are no longer required may opt for travel credits valid for 24 months. Travel-managers holding group PNRS should contact WestJet’s dedicated groups desk to avoid automatic cancellations. The advisory also reminds travellers that Tokyo’s Narita airport may implement “ground holding” programmes, delaying arrivals by up to two hours and triggering mis-connects on onward itineraries. Employers are advised to insert buffer time or reroute via Seoul or Vancouver where capacity permits. Insurance providers note that proactive rebooking under the advisory does not constitute a claimable disruption, so travellers should not expect reimbursement for voluntary hotel stays unless the storm actually causes flight cancellation. This marks WestJet’s first major weather waiver of the 2026 typhoon season. The carrier says its new AI-driven disruption-management platform, introduced in July, will auto-notify ticketed guests via SMS if additional Asian gateways come under threat—technology observers say is a significant step toward end-to-end traveller duty-of-care.
