GPS glitch grounds over 80 Azul Embraer E2 flights across Brazil

A sudden worldwide instability in the satellite-based navigation (GNSS/GPS) system used by Embraer’s second-generation E-Jets (E195-E2 and E190-E2) forced Brazilian carrier Azul Linhas Aéreas to cancel or delay more than 80 flights between the evening of 22 September and the morning of 23 September. Airports in Brasília, São Paulo-Congonhas, Rio de Janeiro-Santos Dumont, Belo Horizonte-Confins and Azul’s main hub at Campinas-Viracopos reported cascading schedule disruptions that affected over 8,000 passengers. Embraer confirmed that the fault did not compromise flight safety but required aircraft to remain on the ground until avionics suppliers restored reliable GPS positioning. Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Airspace Control Department (DECEA) issued a NOTAM advising operators of potential positioning errors and authorising alternative non-GPS procedures where available. For business travellers and multinational firms, the abrupt cancellations highlighted the vulnerability of regional point-to-point networks that many corporate mobility programmes rely on to move staff between industrial clusters in São Paulo, Minas Gerais and the federal capital. Travel managers scrambled to re-route executives onto Latam and Gol services or shift meetings online; several firms invoked force-majeure clauses in mobility policies to cover last-minute hotel nights and ground transport. Operationally, the episode will accelerate ongoing discussions between Embraer, airlines and ANAC on mandating multi-constellation receivers capable of switching to Europe’s Galileo or China’s BeiDou satellites. Azul has already announced a review of contingency plans and says affected customers may rebook or request refunds free of charge within 12 months. Experts say the incident is a wake-up call for the wider Latin-American aviation market, which has rapidly adopted satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures to cut fuel burn and CO₂ emissions. "Redundancy across constellations and better real-time monitoring of space-weather events will be critical to safeguard the reliability on which modern point-to-point business travel depends," notes João Pedro Salles, an aeronautical engineer at the University of Brasília.
