Finnair has quietly overhauled its flight-operations manuals and simulator curricula to prepare crews for near-constant GPS interference encountered on routes skirting NATO’s eastern flank. Speaking to Reuters, CEO Turkka Kuusisto revealed that satellite-navigation outages are now a “daily issue” on approach corridors into Estonia, Latvia and Poland, requiring pilots to transition to traditional radio-navigation or inertial back-up modes at short notice. The electronic warfare spill-over from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has intensified through 2026, with Poland’s Communications Institute reporting GNSS disruptions on most summer days along the Baltic coast. Finnair briefly suspended flights to Tartu earlier this year after repeated signal loss made precision-approach procedures unsafe. The airline has since introduced dedicated simulator sessions that replicate spoofed or degraded GPS signals, training flight crews to switch seamlessly to baro-VNAV or localiser-only approaches. Operationally, Finnair has updated its EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) software to flag NOTAMs on jamming hotspots and has added extra contingency fuel to allow holding or diversion when instrument-approach minima cannot be met. Dispatchers are working closely with Eurocontrol to secure higher-level routings that reduce exposure to low-altitude jamming, albeit at the cost of higher fuel burn. For corporate travel managers, the immediate impact is a potential uptick in delays on Helsinki–Baltic rotations, especially during low-visibility conditions when non-GPS approaches extend track miles. The longer-term concern is cost: Finnair estimates that re-routing and added fuel have already shaved 0.2 percentage points off its EBIT margin this year. These expenses may ultimately be passed on through a winter fuel surcharge. European regulators are monitoring the situation. EASA is expected to issue fresh guidance on resilient PBN (Performance-Based Navigation) later this autumn, while airline lobby group A4E is pressing the EU to fund jam-resistant multi-constellation receivers. Finnish authorities, for their part, have expanded a joint Border Guard–Traficom task force that tracks interference sources and shares real-time alerts with airlines.
