Swiss pilot union escalates labour dispute with SWISS via open letter
The cockpit union Aeropers handed Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) management an open letter on 4 October 2026 signed by more than 1,000 pilots, accusing the carrier of stalling negotiations on a new collective labour agreement (CLA). Talks have been deadlocked since April after Aeropers terminated the previous deal last autumn. Core demands include predictable rostering, higher basic pay and limits on outsourcing flights to wet-lease partners. Aeropers argues that rising traffic through Zurich is being sustained by an overstretched pilot corps working irregular patterns that make family life “nearly impossible”. The union also cites pay gaps with competitors such as Austrian Airlines and KLM. Management counters that SWISS must keep unit costs in check as it takes delivery of fuel-efficient Airbus A350s and contends with volatile long-haul demand. While Aeropers has not yet called a strike ballot, it warns it will “use every legal means” if no progress is made before the winter schedule starts on 29 October. Any industrial action could disrupt hub operations at Zurich and Geneva, where SWISS handles around 48 per cent of seat capacity. Corporate travel managers should therefore prepare contingency routings and check tickets for interline flexibility. The dispute also has knock-on effects for global mobility teams. SWISS is the preferred carrier in many Swiss multinational travel policies because of its extensive non-stop network to North America and Asia. Prolonged uncertainty may force companies to shift travellers to Lufthansa Group partners or alternative routings, potentially increasing journey times and carbon footprints. Both sides return to the bargaining table on 10 October with a federal mediator. If they can bridge differences—possibly through a phased pay rise linked to productivity targets—traveller disruption could still be averted. But HR and travel departments are advised to monitor the situation closely and brief mobile employees on possible last-minute schedule changes.
