Visitor guidance version 18 published: Erasmus+ reinstated and business activity rules clarified
UKVI has issued version 18 of its ‘Visit Caseworker Guidance’, dated 8 October 2026, giving front-line officials—and by extension travellers and their employers—an updated rulebook for the Standard Visitor route. The most eye-catching change is the formal reinstatement of Erasmus+ exchanges as a permitted activity, two years after the UK re-joined the EU programme. Universities can once again host visiting students and academics for up to six months without sponsorship, provided remuneration comes from overseas. For corporates, the guidance adds new example scenarios under ‘PA 7’—the catch-all provision used by consultants and intra-group specialists delivering short-term work. Caseworkers are told to accept presentations at internal conferences, software installation and short bursts of client-site troubleshooting, so long as the visitor remains paid and employed overseas. The document also clarifies that caring for a sick relative during a private visit is allowed, dispelling a long-running grey area that frequently led to refusals at the border. In a nod to risk-based decision-making, officials are instructed to place more weight on an applicant’s global travel history: repeat compliance with US, Schengen or CANZUK immigration laws is now a positive factor; conversely, unexplained gaps in a passport will trigger additional credibility checks. The Home Office hopes the new approach will reduce unnecessary referrals and shorten processing times, which still average 15 working days for visit visas. Business-travel managers should note that the guidance tightens rules on third-party sponsorship. Letters of invitation must now confirm that the inviting company is not itself in breach of immigration laws, and must state exactly how accommodation and living costs will be met. Failure to do so can lead to outright refusal rather than the previous ‘further information’ request. While the updated guidance is not, strictly, the law—it sits beneath Appendix V of the Immigration Rules—it is the document examiners follow in practice. Companies are therefore advised to align template invitation letters, traveller briefings and global mobility policies with the refreshed wording immediately.
