Technical failure at Paris Gare du Nord triggers Eurostar cancellations and major delays
Eurostar passengers faced an unexpected headache on 10 October 2026 after a signalling-equipment failure at Paris Gare du Nord forced the operator to suspend services for several hours. According to Eurostar’s live disruption feed updated at 11:19 CET, trains between Paris and London, Brussels and Amsterdam were first held outside the station and then progressively cancelled while SNCF Réseau engineers repaired track-side electronics that route trains through the Channel-Tunnel platform complex. At the height of the incident, eight departures and seven arrivals were cancelled outright, while a further 14 trains ran with delays ranging from 40 minutes to two hours. Eurostar automatically rebooked affected customers on later services, but many travellers—particularly those with onward flights out of London Heathrow or Paris Charles-de-Gaulle—were forced to make last-minute itinerary changes or overnight plans in Paris. The disruption comes at a sensitive time for Franco-British mobility. Since Brexit, Eurostar has become the primary non-air corridor for business travellers shuttling between the two capitals, accounting for an estimated 40 % of corporate trips on the route. Capacity has already been reduced this autumn because of engineering works on HS1 in Kent and the ongoing requirement for 30 % spare seats to accommodate post-Brexit border checks, meaning there was little slack in the timetable when Tuesday’s failure struck. While technical incidents are not uncommon on Europe’s dense rail network, mobility managers say the frequency of operational problems at Gare du Nord is becoming a reputational risk for France. Régis Caradec, mobility lead for a Paris-based multinational, notes that his firm lost “nearly a full work-day across several deal teams” because of missed client meetings in London. Eurostar says it will seek compensation from SNCF Réseau under its access contract and has promised a full incident report within 10 days. For travellers, the practical advice is clear: build in at least a two-hour buffer for time-critical meetings over the next week in case residual knock-on delays persist, and keep boarding passes handy—staff used them to prioritise passengers with onward flights during Tuesday’s triage. Overseas assignees arriving in France should contact relocation providers if their entry appointments at the prefecture need to be rescheduled.
