Hong Kong’s ‘Iron Triangle’—government, airport and airlines—unveil roadmap to widen the city’s global air network
Hong Kong’s Transport and Logistics Secretary Lam Sai-hung (speaking through his official blog on 13 June) said the SAR government, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) and all home-based carriers have formed an “Iron Triangle” working group dubbed “Hong Kong Inc.” to accelerate recovery and expansion of the city’s aviation footprint. Lam noted that Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) already serves about 220 destinations with some 140 airlines—both figures exceeding pre-pandemic levels. The opening of the fully-automated Third Runway last year, coupled with the phased launch of a rebuilt Terminal 2 accommodating 15 airlines, has created headroom for up to 120 million passengers annually once works finish in 2027.

Travellers eager to take advantage of the extra capacity will also need to think about documentation. VisaHQ’s Hong Kong platform (https://www.visahq.com/hong-kong/) streamlines visa processing for both individuals and corporate mobility teams, offering real-time requirement checks, digital applications and status tracking across most of the new and existing destinations—making it easier to get passengers onto those freshly added flights without administrative headaches.

Policy support is now being channelled into bilateral and multilateral air-services negotiations. Over the past week Hong Kong concluded a revised air-services agreement with Brazil—its 87th bilateral pact—which lifts capacity caps and fifth-freedom rights on the Hong Kong–São Paulo sector. Similar talks are reportedly under way with Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Cathay Pacific confirmed plans to launch a non-stop Hong Kong–Almaty service in the first quarter of 2027, while HK Express and Hong Kong Airlines are being encouraged to apply for unserved routes in Latin America and Central Asia under a newly created “Strategic Route Incentive Scheme”. For corporate mobility managers the message is clear: more non-stop city-pairs, better onward connectivity and a likely easing of premium-class seat shortages that have pushed up business-travel fares over the past two years. Analysts say the initiative also aligns with Beijing’s “Air Silk Road”, positioning Hong Kong as a neutral hub for multinational companies that want access to both mainland China and emerging markets. Employers should monitor forthcoming changes to slot-allocation rules and start budgeting for expanded travel options in 2027.
