Commuters on Barcelona’s Rodalies suburban rail suffered scattered delays on 27 July as a 24-hour stoppage called by the Sindicato Ferroviario protested planned workshop closures and alleged privatisation of freight arm Renfe Mercaderies. Participation was limited—Renfe says just 5.8 % of staff joined—but the union’s late notice meant minimum service rosters were organised overnight, leaving many trains off-schedule during the morning peak. Under Catalan government rules, 66 % of trains must run in rush hour and 33 % the rest of the day. Even so, passengers at Sants and Plaça Catalunya stations reported platform crowding and gaps of 25–30 minutes on the R2 and R4 lines. For businesses reliant on commuter staff or day-trip assignments, the disruption rekindles concerns about Rodalies’ chronic punctuality—officially below 85 % this year versus the 95 % target. The strike follows a month of wildfire-related slow orders, sinkholes and signalling faults; user group PTP claims that service quality is now so erratic that “there is little difference between a strike day and a normal day.” The union has slated another stoppage for 15 August—coinciding with the return phase of Operation Paso del Estrecho. Corporate mobility managers should alert employees to check Renfe’s live-update channels before travel and consider flexible start times or remote work on announced strike dates. Contingency cab-share schemes may be prudent for staff based in the outer Barcelona commuter belt. Longer term, the Ministry of Transport’s 2026-2030 Catalonia suburban plan earmarks €6.3 billion for track upgrades and new rolling stock, but delivery timelines extend into 2029. Until then, businesses will need layered mitigation strategies for Rodalies unpredictability.
