Business travellers heading in or out of Wallonia woke up to disruption on 17 September when Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) confirmed that a spontaneous night-time strike by Skeyes air-traffic controllers had forced the cancellation of more than forty flights between 22:00 on 16 September and 08:00 the following morning. The labour action follows a collapse in negotiations over a new bonus scheme for night shifts and opposition to Skeyes’ ‘digital-tower’ project, which will eventually move control of Charleroi and Liège operations to a remote centre in Namur. Low-cost carrier Ryanair, which bases 15 aircraft at CRL, was hardest hit, scrubbing rotations to business and leisure destinations such as Madrid, Manchester and Stockholm. Wizz Air and TUI fly Belgium also reported schedule changes, while the airport advised passengers to check with their airlines before travelling. With further walk-outs announced every night until 10 October, corporates with tight connection windows are already re-routing via Brussels-Zaventem or Lille. Beyond immediate passenger inconvenience, the dispute exposes a fault-line in Belgium’s wider aviation modernisation strategy. Skeyes argues that remote-tower technology is essential to tackle looming controller shortages and keep regional airports competitive; unions counter that the plan undermines safety and working conditions. If no agreement is found, repeated nightly closures could dent the airport’s reputation with freight forwarders preparing for the peak end-of-year season. For mobility managers the advice is three-fold: build slack into itineraries that involve early-morning departures from Charleroi, monitor contingency schedules published by Skeyes and CRL, and remind travelling staff that EU air-passenger-rights rules (EC 261/2004) limit carrier liability when cancellations are due to air-navigation strikes. Employers should therefore be ready to pick up hotel and re-booking costs. Looking ahead, industrial unrest may spread. The same digital-tower concept is slated for Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp airports in 2027, meaning that the way Belgium modernises its air-navigation services in Wallonia could set a precedent for national roll-out—and for travel reliability across the country.
