Business travellers heading to London for the Labour Party conference reported missing afternoon meetings, prompting calls from the German-British Chamber of Commerce for “urgent contingency co-ordination between ANSPs”. The incident highlights the knock-on effect that foreign ATC problems can have on German corporates with U.K. interests. Mobility managers should remind employees to monitor airline apps and consider rail links via Brussels if travelling to northern England or Scotland on tight schedules. Travellers whose flights were delayed more than three hours into the EU are entitled to compensation under EC 261, unless the carrier can prove the failure was an extraordinary circumstance—a point that may be litigated if NATS’ IT resilience is called into question. Longer-term, the episode may accelerate Eurocontrol’s push for deeper network-level redundancy and could reignite debate about single-sky reforms, which Germany has so far supported in principle but viewed warily in practice. For now, airlines await NATS’ incident report, while passengers hope tomorrow’s departures keep to plan.
