Private high-speed rail operator Iryo has revealed a significant capacity increase for 2027, adding three further ETR 1000 trainsets to lift annual services to 22,764—up 13.8 % on 2026. The plan, detailed on 15 October, will markedly enhance same-day business travel on the Madrid–Málaga and Madrid–Seville corridors, where frequencies will jump 64 % and 39 % respectively. The expansion positions Iryo as the most aggressive challenger to state-owned Renfe on Spain’s liberalised AVE network. With the new timetable, Madrid–Barcelona will exceed 7,740 yearly services, consolidating competition on the country’s busiest business route and exerting downward pressure on fares. Cordoba, Ciudad Real, Puertollano and Zaragoza—important secondary markets for multinational manufacturing plants—will also see double-digit stop increases. For corporates, extra early-morning departures and late-evening returns create more viable ‘there-and-back’ day trips, reducing hotel costs and carbon emissions relative to short-haul flights. Travel managers may wish to renegotiate rail-air comparison thresholds in policy, as rail times approach air door-to-door equivalence while offering lower Scope 3 emissions. Iryo’s onboard 5G Wi-Fi and quiet-zone carriages can be leveraged for productive travel time. The announcement follows record Q3 occupancy of 67 % across Iryo’s network, reflecting rising demand for sustainable domestic mobility. The operator says tickets for the 2027 schedule will open in November, with dynamic pricing starting at €18 Madrid–Valencia and €32 Madrid–Málaga.
