Passenger numbers at Finnish airports rise 7 % year-on-year, but capacity pinch looms
Statistics Finland reported on 22 October that the country’s airports handled 1.8 million travellers in September 2026, up 7 percent versus September 2025 and only six points shy of the pre-pandemic benchmark set in 2019. Helsinki-Vantaa accounted for 1.6 million of those passengers, with Lapland gateways adding a further 204,000. International demand continues to lead the recovery: 84 percent of all passengers flew on foreign routes, and long-haul links to Japan and South Korea jumped 34 percent year-over-year. Domestic traffic grew a more modest 3 percent, though regional airports such as Kuopio and Oulu saw double-digit gains thanks to government subsidised PSO routes. Finavia, the state-owned airport operator, welcomed the momentum but cautioned corporate travel managers about morning-peak congestion. Ground-handling capacity remains constrained as labour markets tighten, and staffing agencies have struggled to fill ramp and security vacancies ahead of the winter-charter season. Finavia recommends arriving at least two hours before Schengen departures and three hours before non-Schengen flights through January. For multinational companies funneling project teams through Helsinki, the numbers are a mixed blessing. Higher frequencies on Asian routes reduce connection times to Tampere’s telecom hub and Oulu’s tech corridor, but security queues and limited lounge space could erode productivity. Travel departments may wish to shift red-eye arrivals to mid-day slots where possible and budget for potential overtime charges if crew changes miss slot windows. Longer term, Finavia is lobbying the transport ministry for accelerated Phase 2 expansion of Helsinki-Vantaa’s Terminal 2 apron to ease gate bottlenecks by 2028. Until then, staggered flight banks and self-service biometrics will be the main tools for keeping Finland competitive as a northern transfer point.
