Rail Strike Ends but Residual Delays Persist on Key Business Corridors
A 24-hour national rail strike led by CUB Trasporti and SGB concluded at 20:59 on 24 July, but Trenitalia, Italo and regional operator Trenord are warning of timetable knock-on effects until the first morning wave of Monday 27 July. During the action, high-speed services between Milan, Rome and Naples operated at roughly 40 % of normal capacity, with priority given to ‘le Frecce’ trains in guaranteed rush-hour windows. Airport links such as the Malpensa Express and Leonardo Express had to run substitute buses, lengthening door-to-door trip times by up to 90 minutes and triggering missed flight connections. With the strike coinciding with the first ‘bollino rosso’ getaway weekend, stations in Milan Centrale, Bologna Centrale and Rome Termini saw long queues at ticket offices. HR mobility teams reported that relocating staff by car was hampered by simultaneous motorway congestion and heavy-goods-vehicle bans. Employers relying on same-day Milan–Rome commuting (pharma, fashion, consulting) were forced to switch to videoconferencing or postpone meetings. Unions are protesting outsourcing and safety standards after several recent depot accidents. If talks with Ferrovie dello Stato do not progress, notice has been filed for an 8-hour stoppage on 14 August—peak Ferragosto traffic. Travel managers should flag this date and maintain contingency hotel blocks near client sites.
