Passengers planning to fly within, to or from Canada early next week may need contingency plans after the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) served WestJet with a 72-hour strike notice late on 30 July 2026. The notice means that more than 4,400 flight attendants could legally walk off the job as early as Sunday, 2 August, potentially crippling WestJet’s mainline network at the height of the summer season and on the eve of the provincially observed Civic Holiday (Monday, 3 August). At the heart of the dispute is how—and whether—cabin crew are paid for several pre- and post-flight duties performed on the ground such as boarding, cabin checks and customer assistance. CUPE claims those tasks are largely unpaid; WestJet maintains they are compensated through a "credit-hour" system that blends flight and ground time into a single formula. The union says the model leaves crew members earning below-average hourly wages compared with both Air Canada and several U.S. carriers. Labour experts note the timing is strategic. "WestJet moves roughly 75,000 passengers a day on more than 600 flights. A work stoppage during a peak holiday weekend maximises leverage while minimising the time the union needs to remain off the job to create operational chaos," explained John Gradek, aviation lecturer at McGill University. CUPE used a similar tactic during last year’s Air Canada strike, which lasted three days before the parties settled. For corporate mobility managers, the uncertainty complicates duty-of-care planning and could force costly last-minute re-bookings. WestJet says regional affiliate WestJet Encore and codeshare flights operated by partners such as Delta are not subject to the strike, but long-haul connecting itineraries could still unravel as aircraft and crews fall out of position. Companies with critical employee travel should map alternative routings through Air Canada, Porter or U.S. hubs and advise travellers to avoid checking bags. Should the walk-out proceed, federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan could intervene under the Canada Labour Code if the stoppage is deemed to endanger public safety or the economy. Observers, however, say Ottawa is reluctant to be seen overriding collective bargaining after recent criticism of back-to-work legislation in other sectors. That places additional pressure on the airline and union to hammer out a deal before the deadline, or risk alienating passengers already frustrated by a summer of record demand and limited spare capacity.
