Hong Kong’s Transport & Logistics Bureau published a Gazette notice on 18 September authorising construction of the Northern Link (NOL) Spur Line, a six-kilometre underground railway that will connect the new San Tin Technopole with Shenzhen’s Huanggang Port in just 11 minutes once operational. The project includes three new stations—two on Hong Kong soil and one in Shenzhen—and dovetails with the city’s Northern Metropolis strategy to integrate more deeply into the Greater Bay Area. Government officials said construction will begin “as soon as practicable” with a target commissioning date of 2034 or earlier. No objections were filed during the public consultation period, underscoring broad community support. For mobility managers, the Spur Line promises to reshape daily commuting patterns. San Tin is being positioned as a new innovation hub; easy rail access to Shenzhen’s vast manufacturing and R&D ecosystem could accelerate cross-border project teams and same-day business trips. The line will also plug directly into Hong Kong’s mass-transit network, offering a one-ticket journey from central districts to Shenzhen tech parks. Infrastructure analysts point out that the project complements the forthcoming high-speed-rail ‘missing link’ between Hong Kong and Beijing, creating a continuous 2,370-km north–south corridor. Together, the schemes are expected to boost property development in the Northern Metropolis and raise demand for cross-boundary work permits and visas.
